我们的问题是：什么是哲学家？第一个答案是与字源学相符合的：即，哲学家是个爱智慧的人。但这与一个好奇的人也可以说是个爱知识的人的那种意义上的爱知识的人，并不是同一回事；庸俗的好奇心并不能使人成为哲学家。因此，这个定义就应该改正为：哲学家是一个爱“洞见真理”的人，但是这种洞见又是什么呢？假设有一个人爱好美的事物，他决心去看一切的新悲剧，去看一切的新图画，去听一切的新音乐。这样的一个人并不就是一个哲学家，因为他只不过爱好美的事物，而哲学家则是爱着美的自身。仅仅爱美的事物的那个人是在做梦，而认识绝对的美的那个人则是清醒的；前者只不过有意见，而后者则有知识。

“知识”和“意见”之间的区别是什么呢？一个人有知识，就是他有着关于某种事物的知识，也就是说，关于某种存在着的事物的知识；因为不存在的事物并不是某种事物（这使我们回想到巴门尼德）。因此知识是不会错误的，因为知识之犯错误，这在逻辑上乃是不可能的。但是意见则可能错误。而这又是怎么可能的呢？意见不可能是关于不存在的东西的意见，因为那是不可能的；意见也不可能是关于存在的东西的意见，因为若是那样，它就是知识了。所以意见就必须是关于既存在而又不存在的东西的意见。但这是怎么可能的呢？答案就是：特殊的事物永远具有着相反的特性：美的事物在某些方面也是丑的；正义的事物在某些方面也是不正义的，等等。一切个别的可感觉的对象，柏拉图这样说，都具有这种矛盾的性质；所以它们都介乎存在与不存在之间，所以就适于作为意见的对象，而非知识的对象。“但是那些看到了绝对永恒与不变的人们则可以说是有知识的，而不仅仅是有意见的。”　这样，我们就达到了一个结论，即意见是属于感官所接触的世界的，而知识则是属于超感觉的永恒的世界的；例如，意见是涉及各别的美的事物的，但知识则是涉及美的自身的。

可是柏拉图的学说里也有某些有着重大意义的东西是不能推源于他的前人的，那就是“理念”论或者说“形式”论。这一理论一部分是逻辑的，一部分则是形而上学的。逻辑的部分涉及一般的字的意义。有许多个体的动物，我们对它们都能够真确地说“这是一只猫”。我们所说的“猫”这个字是什么意义呢？显然那是与每一个个体的猫不同的东西。一个动物是一只猫，看来是因为它分享了一切的猫所共有的一般性质。没有像“猫”这样的一般的字，则语言就无法通行，所以这些字显然并不是没有意义的。但是如果“猫”这个字有任何意义的话，那末它的意义就不是这只猫或那只猫，而是某种普遍的猫性。这种猫性既不随个体的猫出生而出生，而当个体的猫死去的时候，它也并不随之而死去。事实上，它在空间和时间中是没有定位的，它是“永恒的”。这就是这一学说的逻辑部分。支持它的论据（无论其最后有效与否）是很有力量的，并且与这一学说的形而上学的部分完全无关。按照这一学说的形而上学部分说来，“猫”这个字就意味着某个理想的猫，即被神所创造出来的唯一的“猫”。个别的猫都分享着“猫”的性质，但却多少是不完全的；正是由于这种不完全，所以才能有许多的猫。“猫”是真实的；而个别的猫则仅仅是现象。

在《国家篇》的最后一卷中作为对画家进行谴责的一篇序言里，关于理念或者形式的学说有着非常明确的阐述。在这里柏拉图解释道，凡是若干个体有着一个共同的名字的，它们就有着一个共同的“理念”或“形式”。例如，虽然有着许多张床，但只有一个床的“理念”或“形式”。正如镜子里所反映的床仅仅是现象而非实在，所以各个不同的床也不是实在的，而只是“理念”的摹本；“理念”才是一张实在的床，而且是由神所创造的。对于这一个由神所创造出来的床，我们可以有知识，但是对于木匠们所制造出来的许多张床，我们就只能有意见了。

哲学家便只对一个理想的床感到兴趣，而不是对感觉世界中所发见的许多张床感到兴趣。他对于日常的世上事物有着某种程度的漠不关心：“有着高明的心灵而且又是一切时代和一切存在的观察者的人，怎么能对人世生活想得很多呢？”

凡是做过任何一种创造性的工作的人，在或多或少的程度上，都经验过一种心灵状态；这时经过了长期的劳动之后，真理或者美就显现在，或者仿佛是显现在一阵突如其来的光荣里，——它可以仅是关乎某种细小的事情，也可能是关乎全宇宙。在这一刹那间，经验是非常有说服力的；事后可能又有怀疑，但在当时却是完全确凿可信的。我以为在艺术上、在科学上、在文学上以及在哲学上，大多数最美好的创造性的工作都是这样子的一刹那的结果。
